ETTU Opens Asia-Europe Training Camp with 11 Young European Players in South Korea

Under its cross-continental talent development program, the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) has launched the second phase of its Asia-Europe training camp series in Gangneung, South Korea. The event brings together 11 young European players to train alongside the national teams of South Korea, Japan, and Chinese Taipei. Unlike official tournaments, this camp does not count toward world rankings and offers no prize money, but its strategic value is undeniable. According to the schedule, the camp runs from early September to September 12, with two friendly matches arranged on September 5 and 8. Immediately after the camp, the players will move on to the WTT Youth Contender, a ranking youth event also held in Gangneung. Placing the training camp right before an official competition suggests a design as the perfect warm-up, helping young athletes adapt to the playing style and tempo typical of Asia before entering a real competitive environment. This is the second camp in ETTU's long-term plan, following the first camp on Jeju Island (South Korea) and in Havířov (Czech Republic). The program has grown from a Korea-Europe bilateral exchange to a four-association partnership including Japan and Chinese Taipei. An ETTU Vice President stressed that training quality and cultural experience are the two main goals, as Asian table tennis cultures have their own unique ways of building excellence. Although no names or tactical details were announced, analysts believe the 11 players are a young cohort selected through nominations from national associations. China's absence from the program may reflect a choice to cooperate with strong but more accessible partners. The ultimate goal is to close the gap between European and Asian table tennis by exposing young talents early to top-level training environments. With host federations for future stages still unconfirmed, the program is expected to continue expanding until spring 2027. The biggest question now is whether the 11 young players can translate their lessons in Gangneung into concrete results at the upcoming WTT Youth Contender. Their performance will be the first measure of the effectiveness of this ambitious East-West sports exchange model.
